Notwithstanding Cyberabad police chief’s claims about a 21% drop in overall crime rate as compared to last year, cases of kidnapping of women and dowry-related murder show an upward trend.

At 2,394 cases booked this year as compared to 3,095 registered last year, the overall rate of crime against women has plummeted. However, of them, 247 were related to kidnapping, as against 124 reported last year. Dowry-related murders in 2018 stood at six; in 2017, five such cases had been reported.

Similarly, cyber crime cases, too, went up with the police registering 282 cases compared to 255 in 2017. Of those, the Cyberabad police detected 70 cases and arrested 184 persons. A total of ₹4.26 crore worth property was also recovered from them, said Cyberabad Commissioner of Police V.C. Sajjanar during his annual press conference here on Saturday.

“Overall crime rate has come down by 21% in the current year with 16,811 cognisable cases when compared to 21,255 cases registered last year,” he said.

Kidnapping and abduction almost doubled this year when compared to 2017, as the police are registering minor missing cases under the head of kidnapping, and investigating into them.

There are 53 rape cases pertaining to elopement, Mr Sajjanar added.

Murders, dacoity, robbery, house burglaries and even cheating cases have come down in Cyberabad, which also saw a drop in rape cases by 3%.

He said police have implemented effective measures to maintain law and order, as a result of which there is a significant decrease in cognisable offences.

Property offences

Of 2,960 property offences cases registered this year, the Cyberabad police could detect 1,417 cases. The total money lost in the property crimes is over ₹18.86 crore, of which police could recover ₹10.84 crore or 58% of the stolen property.

Speaking about the newly-established Economic Offences Wing, Mr Sajjanar said the wing has frozen ₹ 244.40 crore in various bank accounts of the offenders and ₹2.75 crore in cash has been recovered apart from other properties.

Crime against SCs, STs

So far, this year, the Cyberabad Commissionerate has seen a 17% drop from last year in cases pertaining to crimes against SCs and STs. However, cases of rapes and murders of SCs and STs showed a rise.

Statistics show six murders and 29 rapes were reported this year, while, last year, three murders and 26 rape cases had been registered.

“A total of 218 cases were reported this year against 262 cases booked in 2017,” the Cyberabad Commissioner said.

Even as officials of the three police commissionerates are hot on the heels of two men who have committed a series of chain snatching in the State capital, Mr Sajjanar said there was a 32% reduction in chain snatching this year. “Sixty-three snatching cases were reported so far this year as against 93 cases in 2017,” he said.

The incidents of snatching have seen a dip after the arrest of members of Bawaria community from Uttar Pradesh and installation of community CCTV cameras as well as Nenu Saitham cameras.
