The GHMC will soon initiate a crackdown on illegal dumping of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, besides streamlining the collection and processing of such waste.
Even before the launch of designated processing units, nearly a lakh metric tonnes of C&D waste was removed from various spots of the city by June-end.
The contracted agency chosen by GHMC has also removed 1,200 metric tonnes of debris in the recent drive by the Corporation against footpath encroachments, and transferred it to the C&D waste processing sites at Jeedimetla and Fathullahguda, and the dump yard at Jawahar Nagar for storage.
In February this year, GHMC had entered into an agreement with the Ramky Enviro Engineers for lifting C&D waste and construction and management of processing plants at both sites.
As per the agreement, the agency must complete construction of the plants within nine months and begin the processing. Though the waste was to be collected after the plants were ready, in view of the mounting C&D waste in city, the Corporation has asked the agency to begin shifting the debris at 75% of the tipping fee.
The work for the plants is on at a fast pace, and construction of the weigh bridge is complete.
In view of the ban on illegal dumping of C&D waste, GHMC will identify the vehicles, which alone will be authorised to transport the waste to the sites.
‘Register vehicles’
The vehicles transferring the waste should be registered with the agency. They should be equipped with GPS, so that they can be tracked through Command Control Centre and booked if found resorting to illegal dumping.
Assistant Engineers and Sanitation Field Assistants have been given the responsibility to identify illegal dumping through CC cameras, and report to the higher-ups. Illegal dumping of waste in tanks and nalas will be heavily penalised, and the vehicles will be seized by Enforcement wing.
The bulk generators of C&D waste above 20 tonnes should either establish their own plants or themselves transport it to the processing sites.
Fee outlined
Builders who are demolishing old buildings for the purpose of building anew will have to pay the user charges when applying building permission. Necessary instructions have been issued to the Town Planning wing.
The usual charges are ₹12 per square foot, while the charges for cellar which were ₹50 per square foot earlier, may be revised after study in other states.
As of now, the fee for shifting the C&D waste has been decided as ₹256.5 per tonne, and those who wish to dispose of the waste may contact through ‘My GHMC’ app or call at 040-21111111.
