CPI (M) questions rationale behind early polls

CM should explain people why he is proposing to advance elections: Tammineni

Amid talk of early elections to the State Assembly, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has questioned the rationale behind the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti’s proposal to advance elections when there was no constitutional or other crisis facing the State.

CPI (M) State secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao should explain people about the reasons that prompted him to opt for early polls to the Assembly. “When there is no crisis constitutionally or otherwise, what prompted the urgency with which the ruling party is going ahead for holding early elections? The Chief Minister should explain the reasons,” he said.

Mr. Veerabhadram ridiculed the claims that the TRS would get more than 100 out of the 119 Assembly seats, claiming that the situation on the ground did not point to one-sided election. “There is widespread anti-incumbency as the government has not fulfilled any of its assurances including the construction of the two-bedroom houses. The claims on securing 100 seats are at best aimed at instilling confidence among the ruling party cadre,” he said.

The CPI (M) too was gearing up to fight the polls whenever they were held and the issue was discussed in the meeting of the party’s State secretariat held on Sunday. The CPI (M) led Bahujan Left Front had conducted grassroot level meetings in 75 out of the 119 constituencies and the remaining would be completed soon. The party had commenced the exercise for seat sharing among the partners of the BLF and at the same time, it had started the process for identifying the constituencies where it was strong.

The party’s State committee meeting slated to be held on September 14 at Kamareddy would discuss about the issue and the list of seats where the party intends to field its candidates along with their names would be released thereafter. Replying to queries, he said the BLF was against any tie-up with the Congress or the TRS in the elections whenever they were held. Discussions were on with other Left parties including the CPI on the strategy that should be adopted for the next elections.
