Counselling kin is the key

An important aspect of palliative care service is counselling of family members and training them in providing medical service to the bedridden/terminally-ill patients.

“When one is on his/her death bed, the entire family is emotionally affected. We counsel them to help them come to terms with the fact. This is an important part of our service. Since traumatised family members will be prepared to go to extremes such as selling property to save the patient, they will have doubts. Doctors who are good at counselling speak to the family members,” an official from Health department said.

Some of the common queries that most families ask are about the range of medical options to save the patient and what can be done to mitigate the physical pain. However, the medical teams do not spend the entire day with the patients; they leave after providing treatment.

Patient care

Depending on whether the patient can walk or not, a decision is taken on admitting him/her to palliative care centres or offer home-based care instead.

Those in need of regular monitoring are admitted to the centres.
