Congress confident of good show in byelections

October 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:04 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Congress senior leader Digvijaya Singh on Tuesday expressed confidence that the party could wrest the Warangal Lok Sabha seat while retaining the Narayankhed Assembly seat too in Medak district.

The by-polls were necessitated following Kadiyam Srihari’s resignation from Warangal to join the Telangana Rashtra Samithi Government and Narayankhed fell vacant with the demise of P. Kishta Reddy recently.

At a press conference, the senior Congress leader, who was on a two-day visit to the State, said he had visited Warangal on Monday and found cadres full of confidence about the party’s prospects. He said on October 29, a party cadres meeting would be held in Narayankhed to discuss poll preparedness.

“I am very sure that cadres and leaders will work as hard as it is required to help Congress win the seat again. There is a tradition that in the event of a sitting member’s death, other political parties will not field their candidates so as to ensure that a member of the same family is elected. But here, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao seems to have given it a go-by,” he stated. Pradesh Congress Committee president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said Mr. Singh had participated in the Rajiv Sadbhavana Yatra at Charminar on Monday and apart from meeting party leaders in the Old City before addressing party cadres at Warangal.
