The Telangana Congress celebrated the 72nd birthday of Sonia Gandhi cutting a cake and hailing her services to the party and the country.

TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy attributed the credit for formation of Telangana to her and said people would be indebted to her forever. Hailing the sacrifices of the family, he said Sonia stood by the party and the nation after her husband and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a blast.

Mr. Reddy recalled several path-breaking schemes launched by her as the chairperson of the UPA. The RTI Act, Food Security Act, Right to Education were some of the people-friendly schemes introduced during her regime as UPA chairperson.

He reminded that she led the 132-year old party for the maximum period but was never power-hungry. She rejected the offer of leading the nation as the Prime Minister and instead chose a scholar like Manmohan Singh, he said, adding that it reflected her commitment to serve people rather than going after for power.

Former TPCC president V. Hanumantha Rao, TPCC Treasurer Gudur Narayan Reddy and other senior leaders were present.

Birthday celebrations were held at several other places too.
