The two parties are without chiefs or their district units

Both the ruling TRS and the main opposition Congress are staring at leadership vacuum in the erstwhile united Khammam district ahead of the Gram Panchayat polls and the crucial Lok Sabha elections early next year.

The two parties faced the just concluded Assembly elections without presidents for their respective district units. Internal bickering, difference of opinion between old-timers and new entrants, lack of proper organisational network at the grassroots level took a heavy toll on the poll prospects of the ruling TRS which fared dismally winning just one seat of the total 10 seats — five each in Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts.

In a major setback to the ruling party, its heavyweights Tummala Nageswara Rao and Jalagam Venkat Rao lost their sitting seats Palair and Kothagudem respectively. The major focus laid by the TRS leadership to reinvigorate the party by appointing several leaders from the district in key State level posts including as heads of various State-run corporations failed to yield desired results. Groupism within the party proved disastrous for the TRS in the district at a time when the party returned to power.

Even as the TRS leadership is gearing up for the Gram Panchayat elections across the State, the post of district head of the TRS continues to remain vacant. Shaik Budan Baig, who was the in-charge of the party district affairs for long, resigned from the ruling party last month.

The main opposition Congress is also staring at leadership vacuum. The post of the District Congress Committee (DCC) president remained unfilled ever since the previous incumbent Satyam died after a brief illness last year.
