Many government schools in the old city boast of computers. But in most institutions they are mere show pieces. For want of power connection and other technical glitches they are simply gathering dust.
A number of government schools here have received computers from Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan and other organisations like Naandi Foundation. But students are deprived of any meaningful e-education as the machines remain to be utilised.
Government Boys High School, (GBHS) Dareeche Bawaheer, at Kishanbagh is one such school. Out of the 11 computers available here just two are functioning.
“The computers are not functioning for long and we don’t know whom to approach to make them operational. None of the officials ever bothered to rectify them,” says a teacher from the school.
Some government schools are forced to depend on private computer technicians to get their systems repaired at a substantial cost.
Unable to get this funding some schools have left their systems to gather dust in a corner.
At GHS Darga Burhaneshah school at Phisalbanda computers are dumped in a corner of the staff room without being used.
Interestingly, the office of the Deputy Education Officer, Bandlaguda Mandal, is situated just above the school.
In fact students in as many as fifteen schools along with their teachers admitted that they are not utilising the computers provided, for various reasons. Absence of proper rooms, safety issues, lack of computer knowledge and dedicated staff to impart e-learning are some of the reasons cited by them. The problems that hinder e-learning are indeed many. Though there are computers in some schools, there is no proper power connection to utilise these machines. Some schools like GPS Farooqnagar have returned the computers.
