As part of Jal Shakti Abhiyan, a massive clean-up drive to get rid of weed and trash on Munneru riverbed was launched here on Monday.

The community-based initiative saw scores of volunteers, including NCC cadets, participating in the clean-up drive to remove water hyacinth and other aquatic weed that virtually choked the Bathukamma immersion site on the riverbed.

Excavators and trucks were also deployed to clear mounds of trash and weed from the water body.

Khammam MLA P. Ajay Kumar, Khammam Mayor G. Papa Lal, Joint Collector Anuraag Jayanti, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Priyanka and others participated in the programme.

Earlier, the volunteers took out a rally christened ‘Walk 2 Save Water’ from Kalvavoddu to the Bathukamma immersion site.

NCC cadets displayed placards highlighting the significance of the Central government’s Jal Shakti Abhiyan envisaging rainwater harvesting, watershed development, groundwater recharge and other water conservation activities.
