Yet another kid’s life was snuffed out as the driver of a private school van drove rashly in reverse gear at Injapur village of Vanasthalipuram here on Thursday.

Eighteen-month-old G Rohan Reddy, who was playing outside his house, got dragged by the van and came under its rear wheel when the driver was reversing the vehicle, police said.

The boy’s six-month-pregnant mother, Monika, who was down with fever, was in the house, and his father, Saidi Reddy, a car driver, had left for work when the accident occurred.

The van driver, identified as Shankar (26), a resident of Anthampet village in Nalgonda, failed to notice Rohan playing on the road. Vanasthalipuram inspector A Venkataiah said the boy sustained severe injuries and was shifted to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The accident took place around 7.30 a.m. The bus belongs to Lotus Lamp School in Kammaguda.

According to the eyewitness account, the driver was trying to move the vehicle onto a narrow stretch and ran away from the spot after the accident. Later, he was arrested by the police.

There were about 10 school children in the vehicle and there was no attendant in the van, which is a violation of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Mild tension prevailed at the Lotus Lamp school when the boy’s parents and relatives staged a protest, demanding action against the school management.
