Chain-snatchers end up in police net

Trio, including two criminals from UP, apprehended for their involvement in 11 thefts in span of just 15 hours

The Hyderabad City Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of three persons who allegedly involved in committing a string of 11 chain-snatchings in a span of just 15 hours.

Addressing the media, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar identified the trio as Chintamalla Praneeth Chowdhary, Choka and Monu Valmiki. The ‘gang leader’ Chowdhary, Mr. Kumar pointed out, went to the UK to pursue a degree in business management. He was later deported as he violated certain immigration laws.

After being deported to Delhi, Chowdhary is said to have lived there for a few months and later came in contact with the criminals. Mr Kumar said that the other accused Choka and Monu Valmiki are from Uttar Pradesh. The trio met at a jail in Noida where they were lodged. It is there that they planned chain-snatchings in Hyderabad.

Police said that after the accused arrived in the city, Chowdhary used his knowledge of the city’s topography to plan the offences. The trio then rented a high-end motorcycle from an online service provider after which they recceed several areas such as Hayathnagar, Meerpet, L B Nagar and Vanasthalipuram, among others. While Monu Valmiki used to ride, Choka rode pillion.

Main roads avoided

After familiarising themselves with the neighbourhoods, the trio then zeroed in on locations near main roads so as to make a quick getaway once offences are committed. Mr Kumar said that they avoided the main roads as they are monitored by CCTV cameras.

Once recceeing was done, the accused struck. Within a span of around 15 hours, they allegedly committed 11 chain-snatchings, six in fours hours on December 26, and five within an hour a day later. Chowdhary, however, usually stayed away from the snatchings and was allegedly involved in planning them.

After allegedly committing the offence, the accused abandoned the motorcycle in Talabkatta, Old City. While Monu Valmiki and Choku were apprehended near a hotel in Edi Bazaar while they were travelling on a two-wheeler, Chowdhary was arrested from a lodge in Kacheguda.

Police recovered gold ornaments, two motocycles and a dagger with a 10-inch blade from the accused’s possession.
