Centre delayed ‘severe calamity’ status to Kerala: TPCC

August 21, 2018 11:39 pm | Updated 11:39 pm IST - Hyderabad

The TPCC Treasurer Gudur Narayana Reddy has demanded that the Central government implement the ‘severe calamity’ status for Kerala floods with retrospective effect so that those who made donations earlier could get tax exemptions.

At a press conference here, he also alleged that delay by the Centre in declaring floods in Kerala as a ‘national calamity’ also delayed the donations from private institutions and individuals. He said donations made for relief and rehabilitation works after a calamity are eligible for tax exemptions.

He asked the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, not to show step-motherly treatment towards Kerala in extending assistance to tackle the floods. He said Mr. Modi took nearly 10 days to declare Kerala floods as severe calamity but the Government declared ‘natural calamity’ for floods in Uttarakhand and also the Hudhud cyclone in Andhra Pradesh pretty fast when TDP was part of NDA.
