January 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated November 17, 2021 02:45 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The Telugu Catholic community is commemorating the 300{+t}{+h}anniversary of embracing Christianity by the first Telugu in 1715 on Sunday.

The celebrations organised by the Catholic Reddy Association would be held at Loyola Academy on Sunday from 9 a.m. onwards, according to G. Bala Reddy, president of the organising committee. He said that Fr. Le Gac, leader of Carnatic Mission from France, baptised Thumma Hanumantha Reddy of Madigubba village in Anantapur district in 1715.

The celebrations are being held to commemorate the event, Mr. Bala Reddy said. A large gathering of Catholics from Telangana and A.P. would attend the celebrations, he said.

Meanwhile, Telangana Christian Associations Federation convenor Jerusalem Mathaiah charged that the January 11 celebrations were being organised by one particular community creating rift between other castes among Catholics. Mr. Bala Reddy, however, denied the charge.
