Case registered against Jawed Habib

Complaint about a newspaper advertisement

Hyderabad police registered a criminal case against hair stylist Jawed Habib on Friday, following a complaint lodged by a city-based lawyer A. Karuna Sagar accusing him of hurting religious sentiments of a section of people through a newspaper advertisement about his hair saloon.

An ad by the hair stylist’s chain of saloons appeared recently in a newspaper with the caption ‘Gods too visit JH saloon’, with caricatures of some Hindu gods and goddesses.

Citing the advertisement, Mr. Sagar approached the Saidabad police of Hyderabad alleging that the hair stylist had hurt his religious sentiments. “After seeking legal opinion on the complaint, we registered a case under Section 295-A of Indian Penal Code against the hair stylist,” Saidabad Inspector K. Sattaiah said. A notice under Section 41 of Criminal Procedure Code would be sent to Mr. Habib.

“Depending on his response, further course of action in the case will be decided,” Mr. Sattaiah said. A former convenor of BJP city cell and practising lawyer, Mr. Sagar had filed several complaints earlier on religious matters with police.
