Boxing teams knocked out of national event

January 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Brand Telangana has taken a severe beating for the second time in a national sporting event, after the ignominy of the volleyball team fielded by former India captain V. Ravikanth Reddy being disbanded in the senior national volleyball championship in Chennai.

On Thursday, the boxing teams – belonging to two warring groups of Telangana State – have been sent home from the ongoing Senior Nationals in Nagpur by the Boxing India top brass for not having proper affiliation to the national body. While the Volleyball Federation of India made it clear that they would recognise only the team fielded by the ad hoc panel authorised by it, here the ‘official’ team had even failed to cross the league phase itself and boxers have the dubious distinction of boarding the bus back home this evening with the Federation insisting that it cannot give affiliation to either of the groups. It had in fact formed a panel to look into the issue.
