Dug up roads, Metro Rail works and heavy rains!
They may sound like three different things, but are nothing short of a recipe for disaster for commuters, who are having a tough time travelling in the city. With several stretches either unrepaired or dug up for some works, citizens are fuming at the supposed inaction of civic authorities in fixing roads.
With rains lashing the city over the past week, roads which have been dug up at various places have turned into bottlenecks. The lane leading to Sindhi Colony from Minister Road is now constantly jammed as it was dug up a few weeks ago.
Similarly, traffic on the stretch from the Oliphant Bridge to Musheerabad is mostly slow or jammed at times as the road has been excavated for the metro rail works.
“There are blockades placed to keep traffic at bay where the road has been dug up at Sindhi Colony, which leads to Ministers Road. Anyone can easily fall in if not careful. And the lane leading to Paradise Hotel is the same, and it takes several minutes just to travel a few hundred meters,” fumed Rashima S., whose office is situated near Sindhi Colony.
Sai Krishna, a degree student, said that the travel time from his house in Secunderabad to Begumpet has doubled after the monsoon has set in a few weeks ago. “Add the metro rail works going on at many areas to that, and you get a nightmare,” he remarked, and observed that the city faces a similar situation every year.
Other stretches which have been dug or require repairs at the Shivam Road, the road leading to the Tolichowki flyover up to Shaikpet, Chirec School road at Kondapur, Sardar Patel road in front of the Alladin building, Chilkalguda stretch, Musheerabad main road, Tank Bund road near Buddha Bhavan, Kavadiguda main road, etc. among others.
Abdul Mannan, a dental student, recounted how a girl travelling on her scooter had died in 2013 after she slipped and fell near Begumpet, due to bad roads. “I hope the civic authorities do not wait for a few more lives to be lost before they take some action and fix damaged stretches,” he said.
