‘Mulberry cultivation in State on 10,645 acres’

Telangana has received the ‘Best Bivoltine Silk Producing State’ award at the surging silk event organised by the Central Silk Board in New Delhi.

Principal Secretary and Agriculture Production Commissioner of Telangana C. Parthasarathi received the award from Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Union Minister for Textiles Smriti Z. Irani on Saturday night.

Mr. Parthasarathi said Telangana was encouraging mulberry cultivation required for silk production on 10,645 acres and established farmers’ producer organisation by mobilising 6,500 farmers engaged in sericulture. The extent of mulberry cultivation was divided into crop colonies and steps were taken to establish chawki-rearing centres to produce quality silkworms for bivoltine quality silk.

Stating that mulberry cultivation was going on only on 3,176 acres at the time of State formation, Mr. Parthasarathi said new hybrid varieties of mulberry were provided to farmers for higher production along with subsidised drip irrigation systems.

Besides, ₹75 per kg incentive is being given towards production of cocoons.

He added that steps were being taken to establish three more automatic reeling centres in addition to the existing one for production of silk yarn. Last year, 2,807 tonnes of cocoons were produced in the State and 158.28 tonnes of raw silk yarn was produced from 1,106 tonnes of cocoons.
