The Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar formally launched Anthima Yatra or Aakhri Safar, a scheme where the authorities would perform the last rites of a dead person at a cost of ₹1.

On Sunday morning, on receiving information of the death of one Manchala Lalitha, 40, the authorities visited her house at Katta Rampur and performed her funeral. Mayor S. Ravinder Singh and Sanitation Supervisor Venugopal were part of the funeral procession. Her family members were given a receipt for the conduct of the funeral and also the death certificate on the spot.

After the funeral, the municipal authorities provided food to 50 of the bereaved family members.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said they launched the Anthima Yatra scheme to assist the poor and others who cannot perform a decent funeral for their loved ones owing to financial constraints.

He said they were spending ₹7,000 for a funeral, and added that the MCK has allocated ₹1.5 crore for the implementation of the scheme in the district.

Besides, philanthropists and others have also donated for the ambitious programme, he said.
