Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) signed an agreement with Sports Asia Foundation, partner of the United States Sports Academy (USSA), to launch sports-related courses and training modules in Hyderabad.

This effectively means ASCI is making a foray into sports management and training for the first time in its 63 years of academic journey.

USSA, founded in 1972 in Alabama, USA, is known around the world as America’s sports university, has delivered quality sport education and service programmes in more than 60 nations and will depute its faculty to train Indian coaches, players, administrators and sports enthusiasts at ASCI as part of the agreement.

The MoU was signed by the Sports Asia Foundation head P. Nagendra and ASCI registrar Kalyan K. Roy in the presence of ASCI chairman and former Union Home Secretary K. Padmanabhaiah, and President-CEO of USSA T.J. Rosandich.

“As the educational programme provider under this arrangement, it is important to note that the USSA is the only accredited free-standing sports university in the US,” Dr. Rosandich said, adding, “The academy offers a wide array of sports-specific degree programmes at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level and a wide array of graduate level, non-degree programs at the individual seminar, certificate, certification, and diploma levels.”

Mr. Padmanabhaiah said a new chapter is about to start with regard to the academic aspect of sports in India. “Being the hub of sports activities,Hyderabad provides a perfect setting for special courses in sports,” he added.

ASCI director general Nirmala Apsingikar said an international certification programme in sports management is on the cards besides research and consultancy assignments.
