The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is gearing up for the task of cleaning up the city with the final Ganesh idol immersion that began here on Monday likely to spread late into Tuesday.

GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said on Monday that elaborate arrangements were made for sanitation, road repairs, lifting of debris, street lighting, mobile toilets and the like as people were participating in large numbers in the festivities.

In coordination with other government departments, more than 40,000 personnel have been are deployed for the festivities, with close to 1,000 CCTV cameras installed.

About 40 swimmers with life jackets have been also be requisitioned to safeguard the people if any untoward incident were to occur at the lake.

Mr. Somesh Kumar said 122 special teams with 2,826 workers were kept ready exclusively for the procession route. The GHMC has identified 230 points to clear debris. Every municipal circle has been provided with a JCB and four six-tonners for clearing debris on the procession route.

Main sites of immersion in the city include Hussainsagar, Saroornagar lake, IDL, Hasmathpet, Pragathi Nagar, Sunnam Cheruvu, Gandham Cheruvu and Palle Cheruvu, where arrangements were made for smooth work.

The Commissioner said works were being completed in close coordination with officials drawn from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), police, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, electricity and irrigation departments. The Irrigation Department has installed 36 cranes along Tank Bund, he added.
