App to guide diabetics on Ramzan fasting

June 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The holy month of Ramzan is under way and so is the tricky period for scores of diabetics, who struggle to keep up with fasting and maintaining balanced sugar levels.

On Thursday, MSD Pharmaceuticals launched a mobile app aimed at guiding diabetics through the fasting period with the help of blood sugar tracker and tips for diabetes management during Ramzan. During the launch, endocrinologists said the month-long changes in meal timings, food, usage of medication and daily lifestyle can affect diabetic patients.

The mobile app helps them keep track of blood glucose levels and at the same time gives necessary medical information.

The app helps keep patients better controlled while they participate in the important spiritual practice, MSD officials said in a statement.

Endocrinologist, Care Hospitals, Dr. Bipin Sethi said diabetics should take special care and precautions while fasting during Ramzan.

“It’s essential to monitor blood sugar levels during fasting period because diabetics face a high risk of hypoglycemia especially when they are on certain anti-diabetic drugs. Such mobile applications would be beneficial to patients,” he said.

Dr. Abu Baker, Professor, Princess Durrushehvar Hospital, advised balanced diet. “Appropriate diet and regular exercise is mandatory to keep diabetes under control. Besides, diabetics should also follow an overall healthy regimen and monitor their blood sugar levels regularly,” he said.

Among diabetics, long gaps between food intake along with certain medications often cause glucose levels to drop, showing symptoms like sweating, dizziness and irritability, doctors said.

The application is available for free download in iOS and Android platforms.
