Andhra Pradesh is fast turning out to be a preferred destination for mobile handset and component manufacturing firms, according to Indian Cellular Association (ICA).
“Suitable regulatory interventions and proactive support provided by the State Government during the past 4 to 6 months are turning out to be the clinching factors to turn these investment decisions in favour of the State,” ICA national president Pankaj Mohindroo said.
In a statement, on the eve of the foundation laying for a dedicated mobile handset manufacturing facility in Tirupati by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that the hub will be another important milestone to leverage the State's ability to attract further investments in this sector.
The ICA, he said, has been closely supporting AP's vision to establish the State as a leading global manufacturing destination for mobile handsets and its component eco-system. Mr. Mohindroo is also chairman of the Fast Track Task Force set up by the Centre to promote mobile handset manufacturing eco-system.
Foxconn has started operations in Andhra Pradesh for manufacturing brands like Xiomi and Gionee. Other important brands like Micromax, UTL (Karbonn) and Celkon would kickstart their manufacturing operations soon, he added.
“We are also working with the AP Government to set up design centres and incubation centres to establish the State as a truly global scale mobile handset manufacturing hub based on the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India vision’, he said.
Shri Venkateswara Mobile & Electronics Manufacturing Hub at Tirupati will create more than 10,000 jobs within a year. The ICA expects the hub to contribute at least 5 per cent of our all-India target of 15 lakh jobs by 2019. The FTTF has been established to “catalyze and re-establish a robust mobile handsets and component manufacturing eco-system in India by 2019 with the objective to produce around 500 million handsets, the statement said.
