AP cops to help TDP-TS assess its strengths

Intelligence wing to conduct surveys, say sources

The Telugu Desam Party has commenced the exercise for identifying the Assembly constituencies where it has considerable presence as the stage is being set for its formal alliance with the main Opposition Congress, Telangana Jana Samiti headed by M. Kodandaram and the CPI.

The TDP leadership is reported to have sent a delegation of officials of the Intelligence wing of the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to conduct survey in the constituencies in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits as well as those in Khammam, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts where there was significant presence of “settlers” to ascertain the party’s prospects. The unofficial survey follows a similar exercise conducted across the neighbouring State recently.

The party leadership feels that it has strong presence in Makthal, Devarakadra and Wanaparthy constituencies of erstwhile Mahabubnagar district and Alair, Nalgonda and Kodad seats of old Nalgonda district. The survey, according to sources, was necessitated as the TDP could take it as the basis for negotiating for seats in the alliance.

The development comes in the light of report prepared by the TDP’s Telangana State unit which claimed that the party still has significant presence in around 40 of the 119 Assembly constituencies. The TDP Telangana leaders, at a recent meeting informed party president N. Chandrababu Naidu that the party continues to enjoy support of 10,000 to 30,000 in some constituencies while the survey revealed that there was leadership void in close to 40 other constituencies where its leaders switched loyalties either to the ruling TRS or the Congress.

The TDP, in alliance with the BJP, has won 15 seats in the GHMC limits during the previous elections and the party stood in the second place in some seats in the erstwhile districts of Mahabubnagar, Khammam and Nalgonda. The teams are tasked with the responsibility of assessing the party’s existing strength and the impact of the TDP’s alliance with the Congress on the voters.

In addition, the Intelligence wing is also said to be conducting exercise to identify the constituencies, particularly those within the GHMC limits where the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti did not have significant presence. The teams are likely to stay put in the city till the conclusion of the seat sharing talks between the TDP and the other parties.
