Andhra BJP leaders urge Governor to act

Stone-pelting on Amit Shah

A delegation of BJP leaders of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday submitted a memorandum to Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan here, requesting him to initiate appropriate action against the recent attack on the party’s national president Amit Shah at Alipiri in Tirupati on Friday.

In the memorandum, the leaders said the law and order situation in Andhra Pradesh State was quite alarming and even those with ‘Z’ category security were not safe.

They said the attack on Mr. Shah was a good example to showcase the sorry state of affairs in the State.

AP Home Minister N. Chinarajappa termed the incident as a mere expression of anger and no cases were registered against those involved in the attack.

The BJP delegation, comprising former DGP V. Dinesh Reddy, Ch. Satyakrishnam Raju and U. Venkata Ramana, brought to the Governor’s notice that the AP government had registered cases against BJP activists who had burnt the effigy of TDP legislator Nandamuri Balakrishna following his ‘derogatory’ remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, no case was registered against Mr. Balakrishna, exposing the government’s biased attitude.

Speaking to the media later, Mr. Dinesh Reddy asked the AP government how common man could feel safe when a national leader with ‘Z’ category security was attacked. The State government should have anticipated such an attack due to continuing bad blood between BJP and TDP following the exchange of strongly-worded letters between Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Mr. Shah, he said.

The State’s cold reaction to the incident was raising doubts whether it was State-sponsored, the BJP leaders suggested, adding such behaviour was not good for society and democracy.
