Over 1,600 students attended a seminar on ‘Career opportunities in core engineering sector’ conducted by Triumphant Institute of Management Education (TIME) in association with The Hindu and Jawaharlal Nehrtu Technological University on university campus at Kukatpally on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, university Registrar N. Yadaiah said the present-day engineers have to upgrade their skills to get the right kind of job opportunities as more number of engineers were graduating every year than the actual requirement.

Ch. Venkata Ramana Reddy, Director, UIIC, exhorted the students to assume the role of entrepreneurs and be self-reliant.

M.S. Tonk, General Manager, HR, ONGC, talked of life in public sector units and the encouragement given by the ONGC to engineers by providing various training programmes on skill development.

Work-life balance

“There is an excellent work-life balance at PSUs, which include a great profile in the core sector along with a good package and lots of perks and allowances. Employees at PSUs will have faster growth in the management ladder,” he said.

The ONGC has a fleet of vessels and helicopters used in energy production. It encourages employees to take up projects from other streams of engineering, participate in adventure sports like mountaineering, and other general sports. Famous sports personalities like Virat Kohli, Hima Das, Gautham Gambhir and others were employed with the ONGC and all possible support was provided to them, he said.

G.V. Rao, a motivational speaker, said one should challenge oneself to succeed in life and career, and added that there was no alternative to hard work and dedication.

Sandeep Bandari, DGM, Academics, TIME, analysed GATE exam paper pattern, preparation strategies and opportunities for engineering students through GATE to explore opportunities in PSUs and private sectors and to pursue masters programme abroad.

The number of aspirants for GATE increased due to PSU recruitments via GATE as well as companies providing highly attractive packages for M.Tech graduates. He also said there were several opportunities in research in various organisations like BARC, CSIR and ISRO.
