Hyderabad Metro Rail’s next stretch for commissioning, 16 km between Ameerpet and L.B. Nagar, is likely to happen around September 15. The safety clearance by Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for commencing passenger operations could happen once the L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad submits the signalling Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) certificate, informed HMR Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy on Thursday.

Mr. Reddy pointed out that the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system adopted for Hyderabad Metro Rail is a cutting-edge railway signalling system requiring extensive testing in laboratory and at site before being certified fit for passenger operations.

The safety directorate of M/s Thales, the signalling supplier for Hyderabad Metro along with M/s Halcrow, UK, Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) is checking the test results of different scenarios and analysing the safety case from different viewpoints before issuing the safety certificate for the CBTC between Ameerpet and L.B. Nagar stretch of Corridor 1 (Miyapur- LB Nagar) of 29 km.

“Every day huge amounts of data and analysis reports are being exchanged electronically between the signalling engineers based in Hyderabad with the safety team in Canada,” he explained.

The Metro Rail authorities have already obtained all other safety clearance documents pertaining to metro civil structures, tracks, electrical systems, etc., and had submitted them to the CMRS.

So, once the signalling ISA certificate is also submitted to him by L&TMRH, CMRS and his safety team will inspect the stretch and permit operation of regular commuter metro trains on this section, he added.
