Airing of audio tapes did not disturb peace: lawyer

June 21, 2015 02:31 pm | Updated 02:33 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Lawyers of T News channel are questioning the grounds like ‘disturbing tranquillity’ and ‘developing feelings of enmity, hatred and ill will’, on which the A.P. Police served a notice to the channel under Cable Television Network, on Saturday.

Describing the notice as ‘attack on the freedom of press’, they said airing of the audio tape, in which A.P. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was heard conversing with Telangana nominated MLA Elvis Stephension, had no way disturbed public tranquillity.

“The programme was telecast 10 days ago. Was there a single incident of disturbance? Issuing notice even after nothing has happened indicates the motive is different,” T News channel lawyer G. Kiran Kumar said. He maintained that Visakhapatnam ACP Ramana served notice along with a recorded CD of the programme aired by the channel.

He contended that A.P. police should have first checked up with the forensic experts if the voice heard in the programme aired by the channel was that of Mr. Naidu. They must have confirmed with Mr. Naidu if he had spoken with Stephenson or not before claiming that the content of the programme was ‘false with suggestive innuendoes and half truths’.
