After week-long ordeal, abducted B.Pharm student returns home

A 21-year-old B.Pharm student, who was kidnapped from Hayathnagar seven days ago by a man who lured her with the promise of a job, returned to the city on Tuesday morning.

Sources said the abductor freed her, put her on a bus from Addanki in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. Though it was understood that the accused Ravi Shekhar was caught, police did not divulge details about the arrest or her return.

Laying a trap

On July 23, Ravi Shekhar came to the hotel run by the girl’s father Yadaiah at Bongulur and introduced himself as a surgeon at Osmania General Hospital. After boasting about his achievements and connections, he promised to help his daughter bag a government job. Yadaiah believed him instantly.

He took the father-daughter duo in his car, and after travelling some distance, asked the father to get a print out of the girl’s academic certificates and prepare a resume at a DTP centre at Hayathnagar. As soon as the father got down, the accused sped away with the girl.

Rachakonda police, which groped in the dark for almost a week trying to trace the girl, on Sunday announced ₹1 lakh reward for information about the abductor.

Modus operandi

Police officials associated with the investigation said that the abductor had cheated and sexually assaulted several young women in the past with the promise of a job and high salary.

While investigation was under way, the abductor freed the girl and upon receiving the information, police rushed and brought her back to Hyderabad.

She was taken to a government hospital for a medical exam, said sources.

A Docile Criminal (DC) sheet has been opened at the accused’s native place, Kankipadu, near Vijayawada, police added.
