Adilabad MP Soyam Bapu Rao was placed under house arrest at his residence in Hyderabad on Monday to prevent him from attending a felicitation programme in Armoor of Nizamabad district.

Mr. Rao was stopped from getting out of the house in Boduppal after getting instructions from Nizamabad police about a programme being organised at Armoor without proper permission from the police, Medipally inspector B Anji Reddy said. He said that the police force was deployed at Mr. Rao’s house till evening.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Member of Parliament said, “it was a small felicitation function organised by a group for which the police gave permission and later cancelled it late on Sunday.”

Our Nizamabad correspondent adds: The permission for the function was denied by police after the members of Banjara Seva Samithi gave a call to stop Mr. Rao from attending the function, following which he was detained, said Armoor ACP, Ande Ramulu.

It may be recalled here that there has been a deep rift between Adivasi communities and the Banjaras (Lambadas) in Adilabad district.
