Around 600 aspirants from the two Telugu States, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, are expected to have qualified the Civil Services preliminary exam, the result of which was declared on Saturday.
At the all-India level, 10,468 candidates have been declared qualified of the estimated three lakh candidates who tried their luck. Among these, 39,027 aspirants from the Telugu States appeared for the exam.
Mains would be conducted from September 28 in two phases from this year. The first part would comprise the common compulsory papers that would be held from September 28 to 30. After a week’s gap, the second phase would commence from October 6. In Telangana, the exam centre would be Hyderabad and it would be Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.
“As the number of aspirants who appeared for the exam is relatively less compared to the previous years with the question paper being tougher this time, it’s expected that the cut-off marks for qualifying the mains would be between 50% and 51%,” said Gopala Krishna, director, Brain Tree Hyderabad.
Time cycle compressed
Earlier, the preliminary exam results were declared nearly 60 days after conducting the examination. However, the Second Administrative Reforms Commission headed by former Union Minister Veerappa Moily, in its report, had recommended that the time cycle of the examination be compressed and the main exam be conducted within two months of the preliminary exam.
In consonance with the recommendation, the UPSC announced the preliminary results within 40 days of conducting the exam, on Saturday.
Given the implementation of Second ARC recommendation, the UPSC may even conduct the exam on online mode in future, feel Civil Services trainers.
If online mode is implemented, it would ensure that the time cycle is considerably reduced. This may attract the best talent who are reportedly averse to taking the examination due to the extended time cycle.
