Baby Spa! Yes, you read it right. The unique spa that offers days-old infants hydrotherapy sessions and massage in a scientifically-designed and hygienic environment has now come to Hyderabad.

The concept, which is popular in London, Europe and South Africa, but relatively new in India, involves hydrotherapy, where newborns to nine-month-old babies are made to ‘swim’ in water with the help of a patented floatation device called Bubby.

“The unique brand founded by Laura Sevenus, an expert in swimming, caught my attention during my vacation in London,” said Swathi Kolla, CEO of the Hyderabad facility, during its launch here on Friday.

Ms. Swathi, a young mother herself, learnt more about the concept and consulted doctors and experts in this regard.

After knowing the benefits of hydrotherapy and oil massages for infants, she went back to London to meet Ms. Sevenus, who set up the first Baby Spa there to know more about the philosophy and science behind the concept. Impressed, she took the master franchise for India and set up the first centre in Hyderabad.

An engineer and director of Lakshmi Hyundai Operations, Ms. Swathi said motherhood and passion for babies and healthy living motivated her to bring the Baby Spa to India.

Hydrotherapy supports cognitive and physical development. The sensation of floating in warm water under the careful guidance of paediatric and neonatal staff works wonders for infants’ well being and development. It stimulates their senses, improves balance and coordination and encourages bonding with parents and other babies, explained Ms. Sevenus, who was at the launch of the centre here.

Ms. Swathi, who also got trained by Ms. Sevenus along with her staff, said the regulated warm water in the pods helps put infants at ease and floating with the support of Bubby increases their muscular and skeletal strength through water’s gentle resistance. Care would be taken in providing the right amount of stimulation keeping in mind a baby’s age and individual sensory threshold.

Ms. Swathi also has plans to open one more state-of-the-art Baby Spa in the city and then expand to other cities in south India. At least two sessions per week are ideal for infants, she said.

The centre with all the facilities, including individual and group swim pods and a paediatrician, was launched by Sailaja Kiran, MD of Margadarsi and Pranathi Reddy, senior consultant, obstetrician and gynaecologist, here on Friday.
