A Blockchain solution to spam calls

Tech Mahindra unveils the technology

A Blockchain technology-enabled solution to help telecom service providers address the menace of unsolicited commercial communication (UCC) or spam calls that their customers receive has been unveiled by Tech Mahindra.

In an interaction with the media here, Tech Mahindra’s global practice head (Blockchain) Rajesh Dhuddu said the company has deployed the solution for 30 crore subscribers of a telecom service provider. The IT major is also in the process of deploying the solution for 10 crore more subscribers, he added without sharing details of the telecom companies.

Telecom companies, he said, have been mandated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to put in place Blockchain-enabled solutions to address such calls. The regulation, he added, is expected to come into force in the last week of May.

On what it meant for telecom subscribers, Mr. Dhuddu said, “Technologically, it helps people to take control of what they want to receive and what they want to see. That’s a real control… and nobody can give a reason for not empowering that individual”.

To another query, he said once the TRAI regulation is implemented, the subscribers need to register their preferences either on a website or the app of the telecom companies. Feature phone users could also set their preferences over flash messages. Telecom companies not implementing solutions to curb the menace are liable to be penalised heavily. A release from Tech Mahindra said the TRAI regulations is to enable telecom service providers prevent unauthorised access of their subscribers’ data.
