: Telangana State Women’s Commission has stressed on the registration of marriages as an effective tool for preventing child marriages, and implementation of schemes such as ‘Kalyana Lakshmi’.

Implementation of the Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act has been poor in the State, the Commission’s chairperson Tripurana Venkataratnam noted at a press conference here on Monday, and urged the government to conduct awareness campaigns to increase the numbers.

The Commission has addressed a letter to the Telangana government on the same issue. Special officials are present at the village, mandal and district levels for registration of marriages, who are bound by the law to record the age of the bride, Ms.Venkataratnam said, and noted that child marriages are still rampant in Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda.

Marriage registration will be helpful to women in case they face marital problems in future, and also prevent misappropriation in ‘Kalyana Lakshmi’ and ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ schemes. Ms.Venkataratnam also spoke about the need for speedy investigation and trial in rape cases. She thanked the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for his decision to offer monetary assistance to single women.
