UoH to introduce swipe cards

June 01, 2010 11:49 am | Updated 11:49 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The University of Hyderabad is going the corporate way and students in hostels will now have to swipe their identity cards to get into their rooms from the forthcoming academic year.

To begin with, the service will be introduced in the Tagore International Home housing international students. It will soon be extended to the new 800-bed hostel for local students coming up behind the International Home, says University Vice-Chancellor Seyed E. Hasnain.

While the objective is to ensure security, it will also help authorities in monitoring the students' movement and denying entry to outsiders into hostels. In addition to hostels, the swipe cards will be installed at the University Administrative Building to supervise employees work, he informed.

CCTVs to be installed

This apart, the university is also installing 20 Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on the campus premises. Eight CCTV cameras will be installed at the three gates of the university to monitor trespassers' movement, if any, and the remaining will be installed elsewhere on the campus.

All these cameras will be connected to a central control room to be set up in the Administrative Building and will be monitored round-the-clock, explains Dr. Hasnain. The entire project costs about Rs. 85 lakhs and has been awarded to the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KELTRON), a government agency.

“They have already developed the entire set up and will be installing it in a month,” he said.
