Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao called off his 11-day hunger strike shortly after midnight on Wednesday night, following an announcement by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram in New Delhi that the process of formation of Telangana would be initiated by moving a resolution in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly.

Mr. Rao ended his protest at 0012 hours on Thursday at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences after accepting a glass of juice from Telangana ideologue K. Jayashankar.

The impasse ended after Mr. Rao’s son, K. T. Rama Rao, welcomed Mr. Chidambaram’s statement. He said the way forward would only be the introduction of a Bill in Parliament. “Only then will the people of Telangana and the party believe that their dream of having their own State will fructify,” he said, though with the rider that a separate Telangana without Hyderabad would not be acceptable.

Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao’s decision will defuse the tension that has gripped Andhra Pradesh and sporadic violence in Telangana region since November 29 and help restoring normality in Hyderabad, where people resorted to panic buying of petrol and other essential commodities ahead of a rally to the Assembly planned by students on Thursday.
