After giraffe and bison, the Nehru Zoological Park here is all set to put one more species on display which visitors have been missing here for years.
Otters, the semi-aquatic mammal whose enclosure at the zoo has been lying vacant for last six years, will be back to enthral the visitors in the next few days.
Zoo officials said a pair otters was found in an injured condition near Srisailam reservoir some time back and after rescue was sent here for treatment.
“We have put both under treatment and observation by a team of veterinarians and both have started recuperating,” said Zoo Director K. Bhupal Reddy.
The male otter has recovered fairly well and is being shifted to the enclosure that had remained unoccupied for last six years when the last of the otters at the zoo here died.
“The female otter has some more injuries which are still being attended to. In next two or three days, when it is ready, we will shift to the enclosure and have the pair on display,” Mr. Reddy said.
Basically an aquatic animal with webbed feet that come with thick and smooth dark brown fur, otters are carnivore mammals that eat fish.
Meanwhile, park authorities have started initiatives to acquire rhino.
Towards this end, an exchange proposal has been made with the Patna Zoo for a pair of rhino and the same was under consideration of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).
