Re-designed traffic umbrellas with a chair and bell hailers inside are being installed at nearly 300 junctions in the city.
The constable regulating the flow of vehicles can sit during lean hours or when the traffic is not so high, the Traffic Police Additional Commissioner, C.V. Anand, said on Thursday. The traffic umbrellas with chairs are being provided after complaints from people that policemen often stand on roadside instead at the centre.
The constables too said that they cannot stand for eight hours at a stretch while controlling the traffic too, Mr. Anand said. The umbrella also shields the constable or home guard from heat and rain. The policemen would use the portable public address system kept inside the umbrella to caution people jumping signals, crossing stop line, not wearing seat belts and violating other rules.
Sign boards
The GHMC has arranged 1,957 different sign boards, disaster management equipment kits containing crowbars, dragon lights and cable cutters for the traffic police. Keeping in view the rainy season, 1,000 new rain coats, 2,500 hunter shoes, 500 reflective jackets and 300 traffic batons were given to the constables.
Mr. Anand said parents of the youngsters, who are found driving vehicles rashly, were being counselled. He asked the GHMC officials to upgrade the traffic signal systems at junctions for effective management.
