More trouble in store for Bowenpally teenage driver

Akhil does not have driving licence and is set to face case under 304-A

February 01, 2017 12:49 am | Updated 12:50 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The worst is not yet over for teenager Akhil, and in fact it might just be the beginning.

The 19-year-old, from whose bike two of his friends fell and came under a lorry at Bowenpally recently, is going to face penal action for their death. Akhil also sustained serious injury on his ankle in the accident.

“Firstly, Akhil doesn't have a driving licence. Secondly, the video clip shows that the lorry driver was not at fault,” Bowenpally Inspector K. Kiran said on Tuesday. Akhil is also not the owner of the bike which was involved in the accident.

His friend, D. Venu Gopal, who owns the bike and lent it to him for a ride, is also going to face charge under the Motor Vehicle Act. Lending a vehicle to a person not having driving licence is also a violation. “We are going to serve notice to Gopal as well,” the Inspector said.

But the major case against Akhil would be rash and negligent act resulting in death registered under section 304-A of the IPC. The case was booked when the accident was reported four days ago near the blind curve on Bowenpally-Tadbund stretch. Akhil, police say, was driving the bike at high speed while his two friends sat on pillion. On reaching the curve, he failed to control the bike, despite slamming the brake. The bike hit the median after which three youngsters fell on the other side and came under the oncoming lorry’s rear wheels.

“Initially, we thought the lorry driver was at fault. But the video footage recorded by a roadside camera clearly shows the heavy vehicle driver was not at fault,” the investigators said. The video clip, in a way, established that the lorry driver had no role to play in the accident, say the police.
