January 10, 2017 12:51 am | Updated 12:53 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Rachakonda Police invoked the Preventive Detention Act against a 24-year-old man for allegedly outraging the modesty of a woman.

According to the complaint of a married woman, the accused, Jeevan Sharma, was sending abusive text messages to the victim and insisting her for marriage. Sharma has been named in three cases of offences against women, where allegations of stalking and threatening women if they did not comply with his demands were made.

Cases pertaining to modesty of women are usually handled by SHE Teams. This time however, the Commissioner of Rachakonda, Mahesh Bhagwat, invoked the PD Act against the accused, which police officials noted was a first.

13 child labourers rescued

Meanwhile, the South Zone Police rescued 13 child labour from a bangle making unit in the Old City on Monday.

The cops raided the unit in Nasheman Nagar and arrested two people who own the unit. The rescued children were sent to a home near DRDL. The raid, conducted with revenue and labour officials, was part of ongoing, Operation Smile, taken up a week ago to counter child labour.

In the past, the police had taken up similar raids, said DCP South Zone V. Satyanarayana. In the last two years, nearly 950 children were rescued and 65 adults were imprisoned, the senior official said.

Mr. Satyanarayana said the unit raided on Monday was identified based on information provided a cop. “The bangle making business was being run as a family-run business. When we raided and apprehended the people, a few people claiming to be parents of the children supported the unit,” he said.

However, the police did not fall for the claims and sent the children, most from Bihar, to the home.
