High drama was witnessed in front of Primary Health Centre, Biknur, for several hours with relatives of a pregnant woman, Koninti Bhagya (23), who died after giving birth to a girl child, staging a dharna in the morning.

They withdrew their protest only after the Revenue Divisional Officer, Nagesh Reddy, and District Medical and Health Officer, Chandrashekar, arrived at the spot and assured action against the hospital staff who reportedly operated upon the woman. They also assured them of payment of compensation as per the guidelines.

Security arrangements

Later, police rushed to the spot and made security arrangements to avoid any untoward incident.

According to information reaching here, Bhagya, daughter of Narsavva and Balaiah, had labour pains and was admitted to the PHC at 7 a.m. on Monday. At that time, the PHC medical officer, Srinivas, had not arrived and nurse Kamala, who was at the hospital, informed of the case to the former and attended to the patient.

Bhagya collapsed immediately after delivering a girl child complaining of breathlessness and chest pain even as the hospital staff were making arrangements to shift her to the Area Hospital in an ambulance.

Dr. Chandrashekar told The Hindu that the patient had gone to the hospital with severe pains and was suspected to have collapsed either due to “pulmonary embolism” or “amniotic fluid embolism”. She suffered internal bleeding. Her body was shifted to Area Hospital for post-mortem, he added.
