'Frontline' reporter covering Rohith Vemula death anniversary detained, released

Frontline Correspondent Kunal Shankar.

The police took Frontline' s reporter Kunal Shankar into custody from the University of Hyderabad campus, reportedly after the authorities lodged a trespass complaint against him.

Mr. Shankar, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana Correspondent, went to the university to cover an event to mark the first death anniversary of Rohith Vemula, whose suicide sparked nationwide debate on caste discrimination in educational institutions.

Mr. Shankar was questioned for about an hour and was subsequently released by the Gachibowli police.

A case has been registered against Mr. Shankar for trespass with the Gachibowli police, said Madhapur Assistant Commissioner of Police M. Ramana Kumar.

Mr. Shankar said the police didn't show him the complaint allegedly lodged by the university nor handed him a copy of FIR.

Security in the university has been tightened  and police were deployed across the campus.

Rohith's mother Radhika and other guests are expected to reach the university campus in an hour.
