The Urban Community Department of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) should play a key role in identifying problems of the poor in the city, said Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy.

In a review meeting on the programmes of the UCD, Mr. Reddy said thousands of poor persons in the city were facing social and financial problems, and they needed proper guidance to overcome the difficulties.

While a target was set to extend ₹250 crore to 11,624 women self help groups (SHG), ₹218 crore bank loans have been extended so far. Mr. Reddy directed the UCD to strive to extend the remaining amount to the SHGs soon.

The GHMC stood first among municipal corporations of the country by extending 80% per cent interest-free loans to SHGs.

Community toilets

The UCD should continuously monitor the functioning of 116 voluntary community resource persons under the Swachh Hyderabad programme. Land should be identified for setting up community toilets with the help of engineers, the Commissioner added.

Distribution of identity cards to street vendors, allocation of hawker zones, distribution of Aasara pension cards to senior citizens, and formation of special SHGs for the differently-abled were other important activities that the UCD should focus on, Mr. Reddy said.
