Dasari Sairam, who is currently directing the Telugu movie Devuda was arrested by the L.B. Nagar Special Operations Team sleuths for allegedly hurting religious sentiments by including an offensive scene of a Hindu god in his film.

According to the L.B. Nagar police, Mr. Sairam included scenes in Devuda wherein the hero pours liquor over an idol and puts cigarettes on it as well. On January 1, he along with the film’s producer Gajjela Hari Kumar, who is absconding, released a teaser on YouTube. A section of the public took offence to those scenes.

A complaint was lodged with the police by U. Naveen, a member of the Bajrang Dal, after which a case was registered. Another case was also registered with the Kachiguda police. During interrogation, Mr. Sairam told officials that he put the offensive scenes in Devuda after seeing programmes on TV wherein some devotees pour liquor and light cigarettes as offerings to the Lord in some temples in Karnataka and Ujjain.
