The Cyberabad police cracked the Muthoot Finance dacoity on Wednesday. While key persons are still at large, three of their associates were caught near the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. They are being interrogated.

“We achieved a breakthrough but the looted gold is yet to be recovered. It is only a matter of time now,” Cyberabad police said.

Nearly two dozen special parties of Cyberabad police had been combing different areas in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for one week for the suspects.

A gang of five, two carrying short firearms, drove in an SUV to the Muthoot Finance’s branch at Ramachandrapuram on the city outskirts around 9.20 a.m. on December 28. Posing as CBI officials, they walked inside, bringing along with them one of their associates masquerading as a thief. Once inside the Muthoot office, they whipped out firearms and made off with gold and cash.

Video footage of the SUV and sketches of the suspects, prepared on the basis of description given by Muthoot Finance employees, were the only clues for the sleuths.

Information gathered from vehicle number plate-makers, human intelligence, analysis of mobile phone call data records and updates from teams on the field helped nab some of the accused.
