‘₹ 2 lakh loan waiver possible’

Former minister Nagam Janardhan Reddy, who recently joined the Congress, has justified his decision saying it was only to defeat the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and save Telangana from anti-democratic rule and ensure that farmers’ interests are protected.

At a press conference here, he said Chief Minister K. Chandrashekara Rao had cheated farmers for four years and the promised laon waiver did not serve its purpose as lakhs of farmers had to pay soaring interest in the banks. He said the ₹ 2 lakh loan waiver promised by Congress if it came to power in 2019, was possible and the CM was actually afraid of it and terming it not feasible.

Mr. Reddy said farmers have the confidence in the ₹ 2 lakh farm loan waiver announced by Congress and for KCR only it doesn’t look feasible. He asked wasn’t it the government that forced farmers to ignore cotton and shift to maize and when the crop failed noting was done for them. Similarly, groundnut farmers lost ₹ 1200 per quintal but no support was extended to them.

When farmers were suffering ₹ 22,000 losses per acre the Government’s ₹ 4000 support will not suffice to cover those losses. On his electoral prospects, he said the party leadership would decide on where he would contest from and he was ready to work with anyone including Damodar Reddy in his constituency.
