In the first half of the year, as many as 135 persons died and 1,313 suffered injuries in 129 road accidents in the city.
However, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar said, fatalities in road accidents had come down by 10% when compared to the corresponding period last year.
While 150 persons died till June last year, the number had come down to 135 in the same period this year, he said.
According to him, there was a 16% dip in the death of pedestrians. “Last year, 63 pedestrians were killed, while the number of people who died this year was 53.”
The number of fatal accidents in the city had also seen a steep decline of 12 % when compared to last year’s 146 accidents, the city traffic police chief said and added that road safety in the State capital was improving.
“A crackdown on offence like drunk driving, overspeeding, signal jumping, helmetless riding and issue of e-tickets contributed in a major way to drop in accidents,” said Mr Kumar.
Addressing a press conference to share their ‘progress card’, the officer said the police had issued 1,23,460 tickets for vehicles parked in ‘No Parking’ zone and 1,05,346 tickets were issued for vehicles driven in the wrong direction.
“So far, we have issued 18,12,198 challans for various offences, including minor driving and driving without helmet,” he added.
