Youth’s death after ‘questioning’ raises suspicion

A 19-year-old youth ‘questioned’ by a policeman five days ago in Narela died on Monday, prompting his family to allege that the cop was responsible for the unfortunate incident.

Police, though, have claimed that the youth was diabetic and needed to be hospitalised immediately after the ‘questioning’. Vikramjit Singh, DCP (Outer), said prima facie it appeared that the youth succumbed to his "illness".

"We will wait for the autopsy report to ascertain how he died before concluding whether he died of his illness or of any manhandling," the DCP said, when asked by The Hindu if any action was being planned against the accused policeman. There were no external injuries on his body, the officer added.

The deceased, identified as Rajan, was visiting a fair in outer Delhi's Narela where a quarrel over money led to an organiser at the fair complaining against Rajan to a policeman.

The police claim it was unlikely the policeman beat him up at the fair amidst all the visitors. In any case, Rajan needed to be rushed to a nearby hospital which referred him to Lok Nayak Hospital.

Following his death on Monday, locals protested by blocking NH1.
