A 20-year-old youth died after jumping in front of a running metro train at the Malviya Nagar metro station on Sunday afternoon.
No suicide note was recovered, but the police quoted the victim’s parents saying that he was suffering from depression. He was identified as Hemant, a resident of Sangam Vihar.
Hemant suffered irreparable damage to one of his legs leaving doctors with no alternative except amputating it. Sanjay Bhatia, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways), confirmed Hemant was declared dead by doctors later on the day.
“The incident occurred around 3 p.m. and CCTV footage at platform number one, where Hemant took the fatal plunge, shows no foul play was involved,” said a senior police officer.
Though the police could not record his statement, his parents told the investigators that he was suffering from depression and even undergoing treatment for it. Family discord, according to his parents, was the reason behind Hemant’s depression.
Hemant, who was unemployed, bought a ticket from the Malviya Nagar metro station to Rajiv Chowk.
As a train heading to Jahangirpuri pulled into the station, he jumped onto the tracks in front of the approaching train.
Seeing Hemant jump, the train driver applied emergency brakes, but it was too late. He was caught between the train and the platform which left both his legs in a mangled state. He was pulled out of the tracks in an unconscious state and rushed to a hospital.,”
