A year-old girl was mowed down by a speeding car in north-east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar on Wednesday afternoon, the police said on Thursday.

The accused driver has been arrested, they said.

DCP (North-East) Atul Thakur said that the accused has been identified as Mahender (48), resident of Sonia Vihar. Ananya Gupta had stepped out of her house with her mother when the incident happened, the police said.

“We had to go for a family function. My wife and daughter were going to the market to buy something. Ananya was a bit ahead and the car ran her over in front of my wife,” said victim’s father Sushil Gupta.

The driver had tried to flee but a motorcycle driver blocked his way. The victim succumbed to her injuries in Teg Bahadur Hospital.
