The bodies of the elderly couple were recovered from the room that belonged to their younger son Sumit Khaneja who died in 2017 following prolonged illness, the police said on Sunday.

The elderly couple was found dead at their residence in south Delhi on January 26. Neighbours said Sarla Khaneja remained “visibly upset” since Sumit’s death.

She had even posted a picture of Sumit and her on social media, and had written several messages stating that she “missed him badly”. In a 2017 post, Sarla had posted a picture of Sumit after his death and written, “I love and severely miss you my son. My eyes everywhere search for you dear. Waiting to be with you soonest [sic].”

A neighbour said that Sarla’s elder son Amit, who lives in the United States, had not come to India for his brother’s funeral and had later asked his parents to stay with him in the US for six months.

A police officer said the couple’s elder son is a New York-based doctor and has been informed about their death. However, the officer said that he told them he is “stuck in Florida due to a snowstorm”.

“We have requested him to come to Delhi at the earliest since he has to take care of many legal formalities. The bodies will be kept in the mortuary till he arrives,” said a police officer.
